Thanks to Russ: The show was fucking great! Meeting Duff and Matt at The Edge earlier in the day was amazing. See you all at the ACC show this Monday night. Remember, keep on rocking in the free world!!!

Thanks to Patrick Arteaga: Totally intense concert!! One of the craziest crowds I've ever been in! I still have marks across my torso from the bar!!! I was able to get some sweet ass pictures too! And a couple of the pictures, Slash looked right into my eyes and posed for me to take the picture!!!

I was able to get a guitar pick from Slash but I was so cool how he got it to me! First he looked at me and threw it to me, but since I had 2000 people within 2 inches of me, and 4000 arms, I wasn't able to catch it. But I gave him a look, telling him that I never got the pick and that I would really like one, and he reads my look perfectly!!!

So guess what! He reaches down and hands it right to me!!

I'm still completely pumped about that show, the whole band kicked major ass, as well as Silvertide! Check them out at silvertidemusic.com. "Guitar solos are back!" ~ Slash! Thanks guys!

Thanks to Dusty Emer: I gotta say, I started listening to GNR when I was about 5, now for me to see Velvet Revolver just took me to a new level in life. I was the first guy in line at the show, I got there at around 9am! I figured if I could wait 15 years to see my idols then I could definatly wait 9 hours outside and then another 2 hours inside to see Velvet Revolver... I stood 2 feet away from Slash, Duff, Scott, Dave... Matt of course being behind the kit but still... At the end of the show Duff came right up to the front and handed me the pick he just used! Let me tell you, I've never, ever, seen anything better than that and never will! Until the next Velvet Revolver concert. Thanks for everything, you guys are the definition of rock stars!

The music industry of late, possessed by corporate demons, has been shovelling heaps of stinking crap on to a desensitized disposable culture seemingly unaware. Enter Velvet Revolver with a vile of holy firewater and a rock and roll bible, chucking all those paint by number bands out the window and down that long cement staircase..a heap of tangled twisted bodies piled at the bottom. "Say you love rock and roll motherfucker".

I witnessed such an event in Toronto on May 21 in a sweaty, sticky beer stenched bar with 2,000 fellow believers. Rock and roll had finally returned and it was taking no prisoners.

Velvet Revolver's sold out concert at Kool Haus had been highly anticipated for months. Fans started lining up early. I first passed by the venue at 1 pm and fans were already starting to gather,I can't recall the last time I saw that!

Driving in to Toronto I was nervous, I was flicking around the radio stations looking for word that the band had made it over the border. Finally I heard a report that the band was holding a press conference live at that moment. A press conference..wow..that gave me a rush,a big ol' rock and roll press conference. I was officially stoked,they made it over the border. I got in line around 4:45 pm and quickly noticed everyone wearing vintage rock t-shirts...not one Linkin Park,Good Charlotte etc. etc. shirt to be seen anywhere. The buzz in the air was strong and the atmosphere was electric.

Once inside, beer in hand..I was feeling a jolt of anticipation that I hadn't felt at a concert in a long time. The opening band came and went, "Toronto the polite" gave them their due kudos. The wait began...I tuned into the music cranking on the sound system,a very tastey mix of cool music. A solid tip of the hat to their punk roots was tossed in to the offerings..Dead Boys, New York Dolls, Sex Pistols. I'm not sure if it was coincidence or deliberate, but when the house lights went down and the boys were getting ready to hit the stage..the old school punk band FEAR was blasting over the P.A.,their classic song Let's Start A War. Indeed,that's what the band was there to do. The battle cry has been sounded and Velvet Revolver fully intends to win back the honour and integrity of rock and roll..bloodied but unbowed.

This concert from beginning to end encompassed everything rock and roll was intended to be..loud, fun, sexy, sweaty, reckless and cool.There were no distracting video screens, no back up singers, no horn sections...just 5 guys with a stack of amps and a drum riser and enough attitude to fill a stadium. Scott Weiland looked every bit the rock star he is, no plaid shirts and dirty jeans on this guy..he oozed stage presence and was visually compelling to watch from beginning to end. He owned that stage from the moment he stepped on to it. Duff Mackagan still gives off this unexplainable "coolness" on stage, I think it has to do with the fact that you can tell he really loves being on stage playing live. I can only liken it to the natural cool of Keith Richards.

I first saw Guns N Roses in '91 before the Illusion cd's came out, so I was no stranger to being unfamiliar with new material at a gig. Back then I was able to pick out the songs I thought were going to be huge when people got to know the material...for the most part I was right. As fas as Contraband goes, the standout tracks for me were Headspace, Illegal i Song and Slither just rocks my ass. Fall To Pieces is going to be huge, guaranteed....that it one beautiful, powerful song.

Granted this was billed as a promo tour but I fully see this band heading straight to the arenas. If this stripped down bare to the bones club show is any indication, the arena experience is going to be nothing short of phenominal. Toronto just roared from the beginning of this concert to the end, just like they did whenever GnR came to town, Slash walked up to the mike and said "I knew it was going to be like this here tonight". Strangely enough,so did I. Apart from a few Axl die hards chucking the odd projectile at Scott, this band was entirely accepted as its own entity. Yes it was cool to hear the GnR and STP Scooby Snacks they tossed our way, but this band is going to make it on their own power,their own songs,their own vibe.

Rock and roll is back, bloody crucifixes tossed aside ,empty beer cans crushed under feet, ears ringing..Velvet Revolver have stormed the beaches and they're moving inland.

The photo of the band at their press conference says it all. Slash is wearing a Zeppelin t-shirt,Duff is wearing a Ramones t-shirt. Combine those 2 forces and you have tapped into the essence of rock and rolland that is exactly what Velevet Revolver has done.

I can best sum up my review thusly.. I place Velvet Revolver in Toronto at Kool Haus among the cream of the coolest shows I have ever seen...Kiss '76 (Alive tour), Aerosmith '77, Stones '78, Van Halen '79, Black Flag '82, Guns and Roses '91 (Toronto CNE Grandstand and also Wembley Stadium) and GnR Hamilton '93.

Nuff said? I will see this band each and every opportunity I get. Thank you guys, you've renewed my faith!

Thanks to Rory: I've been to a lot of shows, Metallica, Ozzy twice, Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, R.E.M., AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, just to name a few big ones. I even went to see Axl and the freaks (which was still good by the way). But I've never been to a show like this in my life. Best concert ever! Being right against the bars and seeing these guys up close was one of the best experiences of my life. Ever since Set Me Free was put out with the Hulk soundtrack I've been waiting for this show. It was a real rock n' roll concert and that's what made it so great. The only other time I rocked out so hard was when I saw AC/DC at Sars-stock (I was right at the front by the way). One of the great things about the show was the fact that all of the best GNR fans were there, the ones that either checked Velvet Revolver's website everyday for a year looking for tour dates or paid well over 100 bucks for a 40 dollar ticket. Most of the fans there deserved to be there and most would likely agree it was the best show they ever saw. We got a little bit of everything on the set, which was the same as the other shows. Some classic GNR with "It's So Easy", "Used To Love Her" and my favorite of the night "Mr. Brownstone". Also "Set Me Free" and "Slither" seemed to blow shockwaves through the crowd. And also for anyone who doesn't know if they will get the Contraband cd or not, the new songs I heard were all freakin rockin', I didn't know for sure before this, but I know now, Scott is the perfect fit in this band. I want all of you to get out there and buy this cd on June 8th, I know I'm counting down the days. Please Velvet Revolver, if this gets to you, come back to Toronto as soon as possible, until then see you in Latrobe, PA at that huge festival and if you tour with the Who (rumoured), I'll see you at every stop on that tour. Thanks for the concert of a lifetime guys.

Thanks to Nathan Mellott: The show in Toronto at the Kool Haus was amazing, I was at the front trying to get the best pictures that I could, cause the crowd was out of control the entire show. Scott Weiland is amazing to watch, he just totally controls the stage, his presence is so extreme the way he moves across the stage. Slash is a trip to watch on stage watching him shred the guitar all in which his eyes are closed most of the time, I don't know how he does it but it's so cool to watch. I felt that the band was really enjoying the show. There's just something that I can't put into words about the Toronto crowds. Velvet Revolver did two encores which I thought was great I expected one but not two. When they busted into some STP that was perfect I love STP, I have seen them twice in Toronto and both shows were stellar. I just couldnt believe that Scott sang Negative Creep that was just too much. Watching him on stage he hasn't lost a beat since taking these last few years off to start something entirely new and I am glad that he didn't have trouble getting to the show, that would have sucked, but he did and I am really glad that he was able to make it and perform. I'm glad I was able to go too I mean the show sold out in the blink of en eye. I hope they come around again soon.

Thanks to Eeebs: Such a fuckin night!! I don't even know where to start. Last night was one of the best nights of my life. This just restores the fact that good things happen to good people and having a little fate goes a long way.

We arrived at the Kool Haus at about 6 pm. Scalpers were approaching us as we were making our way to the very end of the line. As we were totally avoiding the scalpers, one of them asked us if we thought he was going to steal our tickets, to which I responded my ticket is behind my back, just in case. Well, I thought that moment was funny and deserved to be in the review.

The line moved quickly, and soon we found ourselves inside of the club. The security was pretty lax... everyone had a camera... and I am pretty sure I saw one guy who recorded the concert. The opening act was amazing... Silver something or other. We made our way from the back of the venue to pretty much the front row. I was so excited to see Velvet Revolver!

I was determined to keep my awesome view of the stage, but before the show began, I started to get really nervous... being a girl right in the front... with assholes already starting to push like crazy. My sister... it was definitely her lucky night... met a guy (oh la la) and she made it to FRONT ROW CENTER (where she was all night, in front of her new guy friend, who made sure she wasn't pushed around too badly. But hey, I would have my moment in the sun as well (more to come about that later :))

Velvet Revolver hit the stage a little past 8:15 pm... and holy fuck!! I just want to thank the assholes who just about pushed like you would not believe. I had to get the fuck out... this was only my second concert experience, and I had no idea things could get so out of control. When Duff and Slash took to the stage, the fuckin rush from behind was too much for me to handle. So like they say if you can't take the heat, get outta the kitchen... so I made it back to approximately the 15th row, just beyond the body surfers and mosh pit... fuckin crazy... but I did have my chance to see Matt, Slash and Duff up close and personal a little bit later ;)

Overall, I really liked the show... but I had mixed feelings... for me, the energy that I felt in 2002 when I saw Guns n' Roses for the first time was very different. But again, for the entire night, the only thing I could think of was my sister (awww, sisterly love) and if she was alright... it was that intense up there. I rocked out in a big way to It's So Easy, Used to Love Her (shout out goes to the hot guy who I chatted too before the concert and was body surfing during that song) and Mr. Brownstone. I really loved Fall to Pieces... incredible song!!! As well as Slither and Set me Free... as for the other songs... I just enjoyed watching Scott put on one hell of a show. I especially loved his police man's hat and pilot sunglasses... and starring at amazement at Matt, Slash (yes, he did wear the top hat beginning midway through the set) and Duff... seeing them all live in concert.

Following the concert, I met up with my friend (who was thoroughly pissed off - due to the intense pushing) and my beaming sister... get this... talk about a night to remember... she walked away with Duff's pick (personally handed to her by Duff), Matt's drum stick (personally handed to her by Matt) and Scott's towel (again, personally handed to her by Scott... after the first time he handed her it, some guy grabbed it from her... I remember hearing Scott mention something about a guy who stole the towel he gave the hot girl in the front row, so he gave her another one a little later on... well, if a boot ever comes out... remember, he was refering to my sister.

We remained at the venue until approximately 11:30, 12 midnight... waiting for the band to leave the venue. I was going to stay, no matter how long it took to see the band. I was kinda disappointed about losing my place at the concert and wanted something to make up for it. I wanted to meet them and possibly have my Velvet Revolver poster (my sister's new guy friend gave it to me... I think he was trying to win points) signed. In any case, it was announced that Velvet Revolver had already left the building.

If you think after waiting 2 hours in the cold, we would just pack it up and go home, well, you are wrong. My friend went home, but come on, you all know me... I am a true fan! My sister and I are both massive fans. I told her, we are going to meet them, and that is that. I am not normally like this at all... but come on, you all know how much I respect the band and appriciate their music! A woman who was standing near us mentioned that Velvet Revolver would be at this particular downtown bar... we asked how she knew about it and she said it already has been mentioned to her a few times.

Yes, being at the right place, at the right time is key.

In any case, we accepted a ride with the guy we just met (crazy, but what the fuck? I now knew we were going to meet the band) and drove to the Brovline... I am not even sure it is called that. Velvet Revolver was having a private party there. Everyone was being turned away at the door. You needed a pass to get in. My sister asked me a few times if we should just leave. I told her no way, we will be allowed in. I had a real good feeling. We asked a few people for their passes as they left... all of whom said no...

A woman was also in line in front of us, and she apparently knew Matt from LA, however, was still not being let into the club as she did not have a pass. She told someone who did have a pass to tell Matt that she was there, waiting to be let in... the doorman then told us no one is getting in without a pass, unless you have been drinking at the bar for 5 or 6 years... to which I responded, "well, how about I start drinking at the bar tonight and come back every Friday night for five years??" and the dude laughed. A few minutes later, the doorman gets a call, and let's Matt's friend in the door... my sister then spoke up and asked if we could go in with her... after all, we got this far, right? And he let us in!!!!

Okay okay... so now we were in the bar, but I thought how the hell are we going to see, let alone meet the band? Apparently, they were at a VIP section, closed off to the public. We found the area and Slash and Duff were right there, sitting down right near the rope, by the bar. We starred in amazement. These guys were right in front of us. I could have reached out and touched them! As we starred, my sister's friend mentioned that he sees Matt outside of the VIP area... it was now our chance!!

Wow. Matt is tall. I did not expect that at all. And good looking - I think I have a new celebrity crush :) My sister met him first and asked him for a handshake... and then a hug. I then told him how happy I was to meet him, and he kissed me! (on the cheek, for those wondering!!). We all chatted for a bit... about how he is liking the tour, about Toronto... my sister even mentioned how she thought how cute he was in the making of the video. After a few minutes, he made his way to the VIP area.

After that moment, we were stunned. We just fuckin talked to Matt Sorum! I was kissed by Matt Sorum!! The night couldn't get any better or could it?

We made our way back to the VIP area. And stood right behind Duff and Slash for about 30 minutes as they chatted it up with the VIPs. We also saw Scott and Dave, but they were further into that section of the VIP bar. I still cannot believe how close we were. Unreal. I urged my sister to talk to Slash... because I know how much she liked him when she was a teenager. I personally did not want to intrude... they probably meet tonnes of people after every concert. Anyway, my sister calls his name, and he turns around and they shake hands. She mentions how much she liked the concert and how much she likes his music he then told her that he hopes that she likes their new album as well.

A few moments later, their stage manager, or someone in the know, begins to flash a flashlight at them. I guess this was the signal it was time to leave. We did not attempt to talk to Duff as he looked very tired. However, as Slash was making his way down the two or three stairs leading from the VIP area, I tapped his arm a few times and called his name... hello, I had to have a few stories of the night as well!!

As Matt was leaving the area, we said, "Bye Matt, bye Matt!" Matt then turned and smiled, recognizing us from before... he stopped, smiled again, and said, "Oh, you two!" with the sweetest expression (okay, I am definitely star struck!! :)) and kissed my sister and then he kissed me again (this time on both cheeks)! Holy fuck... talk about insane! I cannot believe that Matt Sorum, the former drummer for Guns n' Roses kissed us!

But wait... it gets better...

As Velvet Revolver left the bar, the security held back everyone, and was not letting anyone leave except the band, but somehow (oh we have our ways - more like shit luck, if you ask me!) my sister and I were able to leave, right behind the band!! We crossed the road and saw their van... and again, said good bye to the band. Duff waved at me (hehehe - third celebrity moment of the night) - and Matt laughed when he saw my sister and I again... but in a good way :) He then got into the van, and closed the door. We wave to them again through the glass.

Matt then started to blow kisses at us through the window... we laughed... just amazed at what kind of a crazy night this was... my sister being in front row (I am so fuckin happy for her!!), her getting Duff's pick, Matt's stick, and Scott's towel... then getting into a pass only party without a pass... talking to Matt and Slash... standing right near Duff... and now Matt is blowing us fuckin kisses!!! Fuckin surreal night!!

Suddenly, Matt motions us to come closer to the van (unreal!!) and he rolls down the window, and starts talking to us again!! I was completely stunned... if you ever told us years ago that we would be chatting it up with members of Guns n' Roses... like when does that ever happen?? We talked about his pets (hehe, we are such girly girls!), being on tour... and then he mentions that he hopes to see us the next time he is in town with Velvet Revolver. My sister then thanked him for making her dreams come true (it really was such an incredible night) and I agreed!!! The driver then got into the van and Matt rolled up his window, waved, and was gone.

We stood by the side of the street, looked at each other... and screamed!! And that, my friends, was such a fuckin night!!

Thanks to Rocco Fuda: This was by far one of the most remarkable, amazing, eye opening, musically pleasing and special shows I've seen in a very long time. Finally, this is what rock n' roll is all about, the show was spectacular and the music was fucking incredible! I had a great time at this show and I would gladly pay to see them again. Just seeing Slash play, not even 6 feet away from me was the most amazing feeling I ever had, I mean, he is the reason I picked up a guitar and began playing almost 15 years ago and it brought a tear to my eye just being able to see him play live and still full of energy. Thank you Velvet Revolver for coming to Toronto and I will be waiting for your next visit.

Thanks to Gunsguy: I pulled up to the gig about 7PM. Most of the crowd was already inside. We were standing near the tour busses, waiting for our wrist bands, so we could have us some drinks!! lol

I noticed some dude come through the stage door wearing a pass and heading toward the tour busses. He stepped toward the bus door and behind him was this dude with a head full o' afro!!! It was Slash man!!!!! I was star-stuck. I opened my mouth & nothing came out!!! I couldn't move man!!! By the time his name left my lips he was headed into the bus. Damn!!! I blew my only chance to meet a legend.

Inside we went, totally stoked from seeing Slash. I had to piss like a race-horse, so I hit the can. As soon as my fly was opened, Silvertide hit the stage. I never pissed so fast in my life!! lol They were great. The lead guitarist is a legend in the making. Keep yer eyes peeled for this group, I predict they will make it big!!

Enough about Silvertide... As soon as they finished and the crowd dispersed, I grabbed my wife and we headed to stage left, right in front of Slash's Marshalls. Then we waited. The roadies did their thing...including placing Slash's top hat on the stack of Marshalls. The crowd roared with excitement.. I have never seen people get so revved over a hat!!!! lol But then, it's not just any hat is it!?!?!?

The roadie gave the thumbs up and I warned my wife to be ready to rock..and be rocked!!! The lights went down and we were pushed and shoved in every direction, it was fucking incredible!!!

The announcer came on and screamed..."Toronto! You wanted the best, well they couldn't make it!!! So here's what you get... From Hollywood, Velvet Revolver!!!" The crowd surged. The band entered the dark stage and started to jam. They broke into Sucker Train Blues under a flood of strobe lights. Slash took his usual position at stage left and rocked my fuckin' world. He looked like he was lovin' it, grinnin' from ear to ear and waiving to his fans!!! The band couldn't have been tighter. They grooved together as if they've been doing it forever!!!!

By the third song there were only two people between me n' Slash! I could smell his cigarette man!!! I could see the beads of sweat as they dripped onto his guitar!! It was surreal, yet so fuckin' real!!!!

Scott introduced Crackerman by saying "you might recognize this song, this is by Herman's Hermits!" and the crowd went nuts!!! The new band did a phenomenal job on this classic S.T.P. hit.

Slash introduced the next song as "probably the heaviest song on the record, this is called Illegal i Song!"

For the next tune, Duff grabbed the mic. "You might recognize this one!" The crowd exploded as Duff started the bass line for It's So Easy!!! What a rush!!!

The next three songs were from the forthcoming Contraband CD. This is where V.R. showed us all that this is a new band, a fuckin' great band!!!

An encore break gave the crowd a chance to settle down. Slash was the first to re-appear on stage. He non-chalantly grabbed his smokes off the amp, took one out and lit it. He was teasing the crowd and lovin' it! He approached the mic and said, "now, this is what a Rock N' Roll show is supposed to be. When was the last time you were at one of these?" The crowd responded in agreement. Slash continued, "I know I haven't seen one of these in recent memory! I can't think of a better place to have one of these, but right here!!!" As many fans know, Slash loves Toronto.

Slither followed, with an extended intro & Slash solo! It was, in my opinion, the highlight of the show. The crowd went nuts, especially those of us up front! More classic S.T.P. was done to perfection as the band pleased the audience with Sex Type Thing.

After a second encore break, Matt came on and teased the crowd with the intro to You Could Be Mine, then into Mr. Brownstone. It was one big sing along, I loved it!!! I knew the party was almost over as I rocked along to Nirvana's Negative Creep. The house lights came on as we snuck out the back door and back to reality.

I have been to many rock shows in my time, from small clubs to sold out stadiums. This was, by far, the most amazing music experience of my life! Raw, pure Rock N' Roll, from raw, pure rock stars! These guys are going to bring back real Rock N' Roll, just like GN'R did way back in the 80's!

Thanks to Ira: Well I have to say that I can die a happy man after seeing Slash tonight...this was truly history in the making. What an incredible show put on by Scott, Duff, Dave, Matt, and of course Slash. Hearing the new Contraband stuff was awesome, I can't F*cking wait!!! Definite highlights were "Used To Love Her" - truly a great ol' GnR tune, it was awesome and Matt was laughing the entire song!!! "Sex Type Thing" - my favourite STP song ever !!! I went nuts, pure electricity!!! "Mr. Brownstone" - Duff and Matt said that they were gonna shake things up a bit, this pretty much did it for me, couldn't have asked for anything better...all in all, I think Slash said it best, "when was the last time we were at one of these??? This is what a rock show is all about." Thanks Velvet Revolver, come back soon...

Thanks to Emily Simek: Of all the concerts I've been to, this one was the wildest. Talk about sensory overload. (Thank goodness for earplugs) My sister and I had an awesome time. She's the Slash fan and I'm the Scott fan, but I'm also a Dave convert as of last night (due to a shared smile and eye contact - that made my night). We were able to squeeze our way up front, a major advantage over arena shows. The crowd was all pretty young and it was cool to be able to share a Gn'R-esque experience since we're both too young to have gone to a GnR concert back in the 80s and now that STP are finished, same deal. We saw the 'Axl & friends' concert at the Air Canada Centre last year, but Velvet Revolver blew that experience out of the water. Scott brings a real fresh and writhing sexiness to the GnR clan, and everyone was marvelling at how ripped Duff looked - a far cry from his bloated, boozy days. The whole time I felt like I had to pinch myself, it was unreal. The band is truly a rock machine - lots of chemistry and any doubts I've had about them gelling are gone.

The only negative part of the experience was the random (male) crazies in the crowd who thought it appropriate to ram through a packed mass of bodies with open drinks, not cool. Also, we, along with a bunch of others spent two hours waiting around the tour bus afterwards in the hopes of getting a glimpse of the guys, but alas, the band had apparently left via the back door in a limo to the after party at a place that one roadie said he thought began with a 'B' - we're guessing it was the Brass Rail as Slash had once mentioned in a Q107 interview (when he was here with Slash's Snakepit) that he really digs that place. It would have been nice to see them after the show. Next time we'll stake out the whole building instead of just the 'hoax' tour bus :)

Thanks to Gary: I just got back from Velvet Revolver in Toronto last night and all I can say is wow. I was front row right side of the stage in front of Slash...I was squished and didn't give a fuck.

I got to Toronto from Hamilton at 10:00 am and waited for a very long time...When Matt and Duff arrived to the Kool Haus everyone up front of the line was going ape shit or what seemed like apeshit until Slash, Dave and Scott arrived in their big ass tour bus.

Silvertide was decent....The singer was very cool with the crowd, me and a few guys were talking with him before they even opened the doors to the venue. The singer was trying to get the crowd hyped so he went off the stage and into the fans.....I wasn't really impressed by the lead guitar player that much, but the band did good.

Now I don't remember the order of the Velvet Revolver songs but it was pretty much the same as the other shows I believe..Starting with Sucker Train Blues and ending with Nirvana's Negative Creep.

Matt threw me one of his drum sticks and my buddy who I went to Toronto with asked Slash for a pic and got one...Before getting into Mr. Brownstone Matt started playing You Could Be Mine and when everyone was getting hyped he started to laugh and shook his head no.

Anyways the band was amazing.....My pictures are getting developed today so maybe I can get those posted. I have a sore throat and my legs are shot, but it and the long wait was well worth it.

Thanks to Liisa Ladoucleur, special to The Sun: About 12 years ago, a gang of new bands from America gave a big Doc Marten boot to the spandex covered behind of what was then passing for rock music: Cheesy L.A. metal about chicks and, well, things that rhyme with chicks.
One of those revolutionary alternative groups was Stone Temple Pilots. So it was quite something to see former STP singer Scott Weiland fronting what was essentially Guns n' Roses at the Kool Haus last night.

It was even more amazing to watch the newly formed Velvet Revolver tear down the preconceptions about their abilities to blend with an electrifying set. The band faced a difficult task: To satisfy a sold-out crowd of die-hard GNR and STP fans with new, unreleased material.

And yet, from the first note of Sucker Train Blues, from the forthcoming Velvet Revolver disc Contraband, it was clear the fans didn't care if they could sing along. They were thrilled just to be in the same room with Guns guitar god Slash.

Velvet Revolver's members did not rest on their laurels as legendary musicians. Fierce and fearless, they tore through the good stuff off Contraband with vigour and enthusiasm. While Weiland slithered around the stage in a Ramones T-shirt, Slash showed off his signature solo skills, a perfect pair of rock star frontmen.

If the rousing renditions of Velvet Revolver songs Do It For the Kids and Illegal I, weren't thrills enough, they dropped plenty of old favourites into the set. STP's Crackerman got the mosh pit going, while GNR's It's So Easy inspired much whooping, followed by chants of"Axl Sucks!" Singing Axl Rose's parts again on Used to Love Her and Mr. Brownstone, Weiland was backed up nicely by bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum, but never quite made the tunes his own. (Perhaps not a big enough goof to replicate Rose?)

The standout tracks were Velvet Revolver's own -- Big Machine and Slither -- where they teased with atmospheric intros and extended musical movements before unleashing supersized sonic choruses.But by ending with a raucous punk cover of Nirvana's Negative Creep, Velvet Revolver proved that marketing terms like "hair metal" and "alternative" don't apply to music when it simply rocks.

Thanks to RIP: That show was amazing!! By far the best show ever at Kool Haus! Slash, Duff, Matt, Dave and Scott rocked! From the moment they got on stage til the very end the whole crowd was pumped...the wait was long but worth every minute! Playing through new stuff and old classics, every song seemed to be better then the next...including Illegal i Song, Fall To Pieces and my personal favourite Set Me Free....the crowd responded to every move the guys made and you could just feel the energy coming off everyone... a rockin show! Everything about this show was awesome and I bet everyone would agree...the only little problem was the audio on Scott's mic... and I think Dave's guitar mighta messed up but Duff covered that up with a nice bass solo! This was a great show! I hope they come back to Toronto and play another kick ass show! I'll be there again -Thanks guys!

Thanks to Krystian Jakubek: Fucking amazing show... everything went swell, opening act was good, sound was awesome, the view was amazing of the band from anywere you stood. The setlist was pretty much the same as the other setlists that have been posted up. Man I can't fucking wait until the new album comes out some of those new songs fucking sound so good, Sucker Train Blues, Fall To Pieces, fak all of them rocked! I still remember when Velvet Revolver busted out some Brownstone I fucking went nutz!! Overall amazing show worth every penny I spent and worth every fucking time I waited for this day to come! Slash you are my God!!! Velvet Revolver ownz shit now!! Thank you Slash, Dave, Duff, Matt and Scott!

Thanks to Winston: This was a real rock performance. The band was solid through the whole night. The sound levels were a little too much at times, my ears are really ringing right now, but it was worth it. Same set list as the previous shows, highlights were when they performed Set Me Free and Slither, they got the loudest response. Sex Type Thing was wild. Slash said something to the effect of Toronto to be the best place to play a show. Fans weren't too crazy, bottled water and beer cans were thrown a couple times but Scott didn't stop to say anything. Overall great performance, nothing short of amazing. I would have wished for their set to be longer but that's only because it was so damn good!
