Thanks to Chris Pepper: The Live Sets session was interesting at least because of the new songs. I've seen VR a handful of times and Contraband definately needed to be supplemented w/ new material.
I was not dissapointed. They played five or so new songs and I was impressed.
The rockers really caught my attention as you could easily hear the progression of the band from Contraband. Really had some nice grooves and riffs. Where I feel Contraband was a bit choppy with most of their rockers these definatley had a better feel and an easier listen. A couple of the riffs were very cool. I thought any of them could have been a single. I must say the songs were much more impressive than I heard vs the cuts we've heard through youtube and other sources.
Oh yeah, and the Contraband songs were clear and solid.
The Q&A was really painful for the band and the crowd. Everyone wants to ask them about STP and GNR but those questions weren't asked, so the questions that were asked were lame. Not even worth mentioning. Overall a great night.
Thanks to Alyssa: I sat in the sun for hours and didnt get to eat till 10:00 but it was awesome!!!! The guy next to me shook Slash's hand we were so close and nobody was shoving or anything it was great I still can't believe I got in for free.
Thanks to Garry Costa: The band sounded great. Scott looked tanned and sounded great. The new songs were excellent. Definately a different sound. The only downside was this women at the front of the stage having her own Q and A with the band. And various audience members making refrences to Axl Rose when Scott was having problems with the mic's.
Thanks to Kevin Norman: Got to say...this was better than it gets!! It was without a doubt...THE best performance I've seen in decades. Intimate and personal! Up close and in your FACE! Even though there were mic problems..one fan told Scott to pull an Axel on it, Scott kept his cool. Slash was AWESOME! He has really evolved and has become a LEGEND! I look forward to the new CD and hope ALL of you enjoyed it as much as I.
Thanks to In Utero: I thought the whole experience was awesome. The only problem is having to stand "alot" throughout the whole thing. I got there about 5:30 and was shuttled in with a bunch of people whom all seemed to be 30 something? I didn't notice alot of young kids at this taping.
We were dropped off somewhere and waited in another line for 20 minutes, there we went through security where they checked our bags and gave us VIP wristbands. From there they walked us to another line where I was happy to see Wendybird waiting in front Waited in that line for about 30 minutes. From there we were walked to the set where we were finally let in. Walking to the set people started running and pushing from behind so we were snaked out of front row but were 2nd front and center.
The cameras kept wisking back and forth in the front so the people in the very front had to be careful not to get hit by the cameras and a camera was swinging overhead filming. Before the band came on stage we had to pretend the band was in front of us while they taped us take after take for lighting. It's hard to stand that long. Adrenaline kicks in and helps you out when your back and feet are killing you. Wear tennis shoes is anyone ever goes to one of these things!
Finally the band came out and we were "live". They all looked great and played great, it seemed like Scott was just warming up when he sang the last song-meaning he finally took off his hat and started to kick ass. The audience seemed to warm up too, toward the end everyone was screaming and making alot of noice and the band was Rocking!!
At the end the band came back out minus Scott. Duff asked us if we knew what was gonna happen? everyone said "No" Matt began to built up and the band joined in to the beginning of Slash's solo for "Fall to Pieces" at the drop of a hat, which was really cool to just hear that solo again I guess the camera's didn't get Slash's solo.
The NEW songs friggin Rock, they played them like they've been playing them for years. Everyone is going to absolutely love them when they hear them played live or when they hear the album!
Yes Scott said that was a rumor that they won't be playing GnR/STP live, he said of course they'll continue to play thoses songs that it is fun for them to play them.
The whole thing ended close to 10PM and we went straight to our shuttle. They filmed us as we walked out of the set and they said they filmed the band walking out their trailor's as part of the taping at the end. The bands trailors were right outside the set and so were their limo's. Matt came out right away and chatted with the fans.
Famous Photographer Jim Marshall was there taking some shots. Got to see Avis Calavis-Doug Grean and Danny perform in Hollywood after the show at the Hotel Cafe. Man what a cool little place I'd go there everynight if I went out everynight, lol. Doug is an incredible guitar player and song writer. Their songs were so good and amusing, great entertainment!. Got to talk with Rocco too
I'm so happy to be so fortunate to have been a part of this Nissan Live Set's thing. Looking forward to seeing VR Friday at the Avalon in Hollywood, then traveling the next day to see them again in San Fra.
Thanks to Zak: I flew in from Bangor Maine to see this show and it was worth it! I am just arriving home now at 12:30 est on Sunday. I was one of the lucky few who got to shake Slash's "Stash's" hand. Yes, the questions were dumb, but it was fun watching Slash pull up the trap door on stage while Scott was answering one of the questions. Anyone else see that? All in all, I can't wait for Libertad, and I'll be in Boston on the 16th of May to watch them do it all over again.
Thanks to slash_frehley: Yeah, it was a great show. I was the first one there, arriving at noon and was in front of Slash in the front row. I ended up getting one of picks and one of Matt's sticks. The new songs were awesome live. Last Fight was great, it had a really good groove to it. She Builds Quick Machines is so much better live than the audio we have suggests.
Thanks to dl8esman119: Show was f*ucking awesome!! True the Q&A sucked, but it gave the fans a chance to interact with the band in a way that is probably impossible in a regular concert setting! A guy to my left even asked Scott if it was true that they were gonna stop playing STP and GN'R songs..Scott said no! That it's a rumor! That those songs are important/fun (Didn't really catch that part) for them to play....straight from Scott's mouth!! Did anyone else catch that? I thought that the whole "taping crowd reactions without the band being there" was really stupid! And yes, the microphone was giving the band some serious problems during the Q&A and even through the first 3 songs as Scott pointed out, but they were pretty good sports about it. The band was just really awesome, very friendly to all the fans, one lucky girl with a "Matt I want some drumsticks" sign got what she came for, people in the first couple of rows got some hand shakes at the end..it was just great!!!! Definately a nice addition to next week's show! See you all there!!!
P.S.
Stupid "floor director" or whatever called Slash "stash"...what a dumbass!
Thanks to Trist805#2: I had a great time. I always say this about a VR concert, but it was my favorite! I got to hang out with SourGirl23 and Nightrain_80 and his guest and they were all really cool. The place had a very personal setting with the band (even though it will be broadcast as well.) I really liked the QnA part even though the sound was messed up at times and there were a few silly questions. It's cool they did that. They all rocked too. They played a bunch of new songs and SBQM sounds great live. GOTD is very heavy. I actually didn't care about them not playing the old covers.
Thanks to OhTheHorror: Ok. The taping was all jumbly, they had a screwed up mic that was lacking battery power... where were the duracells... and the band got asked horrendously bad questions (sorry if anyone on here was one of the people who asked them, but they were terrible) so much so that the band didn't know what to say and it led them to ramble and kinda lose focus... however....
What we really care about..
The band cooked... the new songs, rock... also.. they played this Fight could be the last Fight... amazing...
and let's see... ok. I wasn't thrilled with She Builds Quick Machines as the first single or a song in general off the bootlegs/videos on youtube...as I know some of you agreed on being skeptical, especially with Scott's lyrics, but let me say.. it is GREATTTT... awesome live and I can't wait to hear the studio version. It is really catchy and is sure to be a hit....
I'm sure more people will detail everything out, but there is my two cents... I think the show in Hollywood next week is gonna blow the roof off...
Thanks to Dogmai: Overall awesome show, there was mucho mic problems and Slash and Scott were both very aggrevated over it. The Q and A were pointless as alot of the people sounded like they didn't know much about the band (or at least haven't read many VR interviews). Best question though was why do you guys still rock so hard? Answer....the pussy.
Thanks to Zayde and Amber: WOW!!! An amazing taping and unbelievable energy from the band. This being our 14th time seeing VR, it's safe to say that they seem to have refound inspiration with their new material. The energy was unbelievable. It was a short set because it was for online broadcast and there was a Q & A (2 actually) that drug on too long mostly because of technical difficulties and some not-so-great questions, even though the band's answers were all insightful and good. But aside from that, it was perfection and this was the first time VR ever played The Last Fight live. What a ballad, I can't say enough about its raw power. The other new material was fantastic. The new material is less GNR and STP and more VR, but deeper emotionally speaking than the stuff on Contraband. She Mine is fun and sexy, Get Out the Door is like the Doors meets Zeppelin (in tone and Scott had kind of a Robert Plant type voice thing going on there), Let it Roll is a pure rocker, and She Builds Quick Machines has the depth necessary to be a great lead off single for the album. All in all, 5 new songs were played as well as 4 Contraband greats. Can't wait for Libertad!
