Thanks to Max : Sparta, I was not so fond of. I guess they were alright, but they looked fake up there on the stage, and it wasn't my favorite type of music. Alice In Chains were fucking amazing! And then when they put the curtain up for VR, and then started the rap song, that was just hilarious. Finally, Slash came up with Let It Roll, and the curtain dropped...literally. It was so great, Alice In Chains were amazing, but Velvet Revolver just totally blew them away. I forgot AIC even played. And the acoustic set in the middle of the song was just soo great. They did i think three or two Stone Temple Pilot songs, and three GNR songs: Mr. Brownstone, Patience, and It's So Easy. The only STP song I could remember was Interstate Love Song. Anywho, it was such a fucking great show. The lighting was amazing, the venue was great, the sound was great. I had seen Rush there, and the sound for them wasn't so good the first four songs, but VR was just perfect throughout the whole show.
Thanks to rita: A black curtain comes down, blocking the view of a ready and waiting stage, and has to be held against the breeze by the security guys. The minutes tick by, the crowd is hyped then Slash's silhouette looms over you...the curtain falls...
Velvet Revolver is off and running with Let It Roll the first song off their Libertad CD.
One of the great things about these guys is, one of them is ALWAYS ON,
hard to decide who to watch.
Yes, you can stay glued to singer Scott Weiland, he has enough energy to captive you for the whole show, but the rest of VR's crew commands attention also and there's a wealth of theatrics. This is wrapped around solid musicianship, no faltering, sure they can play with their eyes & ears closed, lol:)
Take Dave Kushner... some nights he stands back and takes care of business, just being one with his guitar. Then catch him on a night when he lets loose and the man is running from one side of the stage to the other and jumping on and off risers like he's in training for God knows what!
Slash, guitar hero that he is, also goes through phases...he's got his cigarette hanging from his mouth moments, taking you to heaven & back guitar solos, then blanketing the stage with his presence, even on occasion losing the hat & shades! Love that he is worshiped by all ages, lots of young guys come to watch him.
Duff McKagan is a man of many talents, bass man foremost...yes, but covers major backing vocals and acoustic guitar too. Duff can take that stage in dictatorial fashion, standing in front of the crowd like a virtual Adonis.
Scott Weiland...how many singers are there that become one with their music? This is a body & soul offering. What comes out of his mouth feeds your ears but his body movements are that of an orchestra conductor.
Drummer Matt Sorum is as solid as his tom. I have always wished someone would invent a riser strong enough but easy to tour with that would put the kit up so you could see drummers better. They always get stuck in the back...it was awesome to have Matt up with the rest for their acoustic songs.
Yes, half way through their show was a noteworthy acoustic set. Three songs... one of their own, and Interstate Love Song/STP. Then G'n'R Patience, done with three guitars...bliss I tell you. Scott nailed the vocal with true passion and emotion. Love Slash's double neck guitar work.
The mix of songs was a perfect balance, third Libertad, third Contraband and third Stone Temple Pilots / Guns 'n' Roses. Vasoline kicked ass, Weiland with the bull horn, brought in Sucker Time Blues. Fall To Pieces had everyone singing. Seventeen songs, not a weak link amongst them.
Tampa got two encores, Slither and then a bring the house down version of Mr. Brownstone. West Palm got gypped because they were really late starting. What most don't know is they made up for it by putting on a more conscious performance. Tons of energy exchanged. It was all encompassing. These men are capable of true brilliance, despite the alcohol(saw beer drinking both nights) or drugs.
Seeing them live, turns you into a repeat offender, rock on VELVET REVOLVER!
